A Story That Refused to Stay Small: Entering A Pocketful of Hopes into the Hero Chronicles Contest

Some stories begin with a plan.

Others politely follow an outline.

And then there are the stories that decide they have plans of their own.

A Pocketful of Hopes has been one of those stories.

It began as an idea for the Hero Chronicles contest—a story I intended to keep within the contest's original limits. I thought I knew where it was going.

I was wrong.

The more I wrote, the more Timothy and Jenna revealed themselves as people rather than characters. Their journey became larger than a single adventure. What started as two Victorian children thrown into an impossible situation quickly grew into a story about hope, courage, family, sacrifice, and the quiet choices ordinary people make when darkness comes knocking.

Along the way I met characters I never expected to write.

Lillian.

Luke.

Nedrincks.

Kahri.

Tyga.

Cal.

Ellie.

Barnaby and his family.

Each one insisted on becoming more than a name on a page.

One of my favorite surprises has been discovering how differently Timothy and Jenna approach the world. Timothy observes quietly, weighs every decision, and constantly tries to understand the people around him. Jenna, on the other hand, charges forward with questions, stubborn determination, and a remarkable ability to connect with people who have forgotten how to hope.

Together, they have made this one of the most rewarding stories I've written.

When the Hero Chronicles contest expanded its rules to allow ongoing stories, it felt like exactly what this project needed. Rather than rushing to force an ending, I was able to let the story breathe and continue growing into what it wanted to become.

That doesn't mean Timothy and Jenna's adventure is over.

In many ways...

It's only just beginning.

Thank you to everyone who has encouraged my writing, read my work, and cheered these two unlikely heroes along.

I can't wait to share where their journey leads next.

Follow Timothy and Jenna's adventure in the ongoing web novel as new chapters release once the contest is judged, in the Celestial Library,

while I continue building toward the complete novel edition that will eventually become available through Celestial Imprint Publishing.
