Somewhere between storm worlds, underground arenas, hidden creatures beneath city waters, and the question of what people are willing to become for the ones they love...I apparently wandered into slasher horror territory. 😅
I recently submitted two stories, My Waters and A Hundred Lives, to Vocal Plus’s Stay Awhile horror contest—a slasher-inspired challenge centered around isolated locations and the terrifying realization that something else is there with you.
Both stories surprised me while writing them. One became an unsettling urban creature horror story hiding beneath a city preserve, while the other spiraled into storm-world arena fights, resurrection, sacrifice, and cosmic sci-fi horror. Neither ended where I expected them to...which honestly tends to be when the best stories happen.
No matter what comes of the contest itself, I’m incredibly glad I pushed myself creatively and explored a genre that I normally don’t spend much time in. Horror has a strange way of revealing what sits underneath a story—love, grief, obsession, survival, sacrifice—and these stories definitely dug into all of that.
Now we wait and see what lurks in the dark. 👀
