From Page to Picture: Joining the 48 Hour Film Project
There are few creative challenges quite like the 48 Hour Film Project.
This year, I had the opportunity to join the writing team at Theater Genesis once again, helping develop the story for our entry, Keeping the Lights On & the Coffee Full. Given only a genre, a required line, and a handful of mandatory elements, our team had just 48 hours to brainstorm, write, film, edit, and submit an original short film.
As a writer, it was a fascinating change of pace.
Film writing asks different questions than fiction. Every line of dialogue, every prop, every location, and every minute on screen has to earn its place.
It challenged me to think visually, collaborate with other creatives, and watch a story evolve from an idea into something that could be performed in front of a camera.
One of my favorite parts of the experience was seeing how quickly ideas transformed through collaboration.
A simple mystery surrounding a cleaned coffee pot grew into a heartfelt story about communication, family, and the lengths people will go to keep both their business and relationships alive.
No matter where the competition places us, experiences like this remind me why I love storytelling in all its forms.
Every project teaches something new, and every collaboration opens the door to another creative adventure.
